I've been trying for many years to meditate. For me it is still something that happens intermittently, and I don't get much out of it. However, in a random moment today, I was thinking that maybe one of the reasons that I find it hard is because I'm not letting myself relax at the beginning. If you think about it, for the past few hundred thousand years relaxing totally usually meant that we became something else's lunch. So it is hardly surprising that I find it difficult to switch off and concentrate! What I am planning on doing (and anyone else is welcome to try and report back) is the next time I meditate make a conscious effort at the beginning of the session to remind myself that I am safe and secure and that it is OK to concentrate and that I don't have to be hyperaware on everything else. I'll let you know how I get on!

I'm in the process of typing in a 10 page(handwritten) article on meditation on my website, pathlayer.co.nr. If you check there in a few days it should be up, mabey it will have something useful for you.

Cool! Let me know when it's done, and I'll see what can help. The "Permission to meditate" idea didn't seem to make much difference.

OK, its all up(gosh it took a long time to type) You can get to it by going to pathlayer.co.nr, clicking on articles, then meditation, and then intro to meditation. Leme know what you think.

Fantastic article! Really well written, very clear, and made me go "yay, I want to try this out". There are a couple of minor grammatical issues (teacher moment!): "Kea" should be "Key" being the main one. Good work!

it helps me in meditating to focus on an object like a picture or a lit candle. also, make sure that whatever room your're meditating in is quiet. all of this works for me, maybe it might work for you as well.

i think the easyest way to meditate it to relax and just foucos on your breating in out in out in out ect ect ect for like [however long you want to meditate] it works for me {{{but than again i meditate upside down}}} but that makes no diffrence

Well, it's still not really working for me! Probably due to my stress levels. Never become a teacher - believe me, the long holidays do not make up for the rubbish I have to put up with. NB - please could you make sure you spell-check your posts if you are not very good at writing? Words like "easyest" and "diffrence" would be picked up that way.

"Never become a teacher "
Does teaching psi to newbies count? Because that's also stress filled.

Nightshade, what you are describing is probly immersion meditation(again, depending on how you do it) which is adressed in the article. Cool, so far I've hit most everything.

meditating is not for everyone...try to find other ways to train your mind/relax if that is your desired intent.

Neo, you are bad at meditating because your mind and body won't relax- which what meditation hopes to achieve. The only reason you can't meditate is because you won't practice. Just as you cannot move a chair with first time telekinesis, you won't be able to meditate for an hour. Just force yourself to sit down and calm yourself mentally. The article has a section on physical relaxation, so you should try that as well.
