Here is a research paper I wrote for English. You all might find it interesting:
Indigo Children
The word indigo is an unusual word to associate children with. This causes one to wonder what person first came up with this term and the reason behind it. One must also ponder the questions of identifying indigo children, the history of indigo children, the difference between indigo children and normal children, and the problems do indigo children face. When one looks into these questions one will realized that indigo children are all around us and they wary some attention. Their highly creative views, special abilities and troubled behavior sets them apart from society and they are often frowned on or misunderstood.
The traits of indigo children are very obvious. The children are naturally set apart from society because of their unique and strong traits. Indigo children are described to be bright, intelligent, restless, impatient, fearless, empathic, disruptive, creative, spiritual, intuitive, nonconformists, rebellious, and energetic. The children are able to see through society’s corruption with unusual clarity. Indigo children are usually wrongly diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Indigo children are temporary phenomena that are natural and will be replaced in time. There have been many colors among that exist of human kind. Each generation has a color or name assigned with distinctive characteristics. With each generation the human race is evolving. Indigo children represent a new evolution step in the history of mankind. The next generation has already started to emerge and is known as the crystal children.
Indigo children are a rather new generation. The majority were born in the 1980’s, although they were starting to appear as early as the 1970’s. They were publicly made recognized by several authors, which were trying to bring attention to how different these children are and what can be done about them.
Nancy Ann Tappe, a parapsychologist in San Diego, was the first to observe and described indigo children. In 1982, Nancy Tappe published a book titled: Understanding Your Life Through Color, on auras. In the book she came up with a system of classifying behavior patterns with colors. This book is the first introduced the name and origin behind indigo children.
Lee Carroll and Jan Tober wrote the book: The Indigo Children: The New Kids Have Arrived. The book was so well-liked that it sold twenty-five thousand copies since 1999. In the book the two authors explain the traits of indigo children.
Another author to shine light on indigo children is Doreen Virtue. Doreen Virtue was a producer of The Indigo Evolution and who wrote a book called The Care and Feeding of Indigo Children. Virtue focuses on the negative opinion of masses on indigo children. She explains how parents misinterpret their children’s rare gifts.
James Twyman is another film maker who focuses on indigo children and the positives of things the children can do. James Twyman made a documentary about indigo children called The Indigo Evolution. The movie was shown in over five hundred churches, campus, and community centers. The movie shows how indigo children can help the world and people should work in harmony with these different individuals.
The indigo part refers to the color of the aura, the energy field, around someone. This aura can be seen by certain people as a deep, vivid blue. The reason the children are given the name of indigo children is the qualities of indigo children are very apparent in early years of childhood.
The traits mentioned, cause indigo children to have poor social skills, which leads to many difficulties. Indigo children struggle in school for several reasons. They have a certain feeling of supremacy and think they have a right to be here in the world. These children have trouble following rules, understanding the logic in social and business systems, and respecting authority due to their rebellious and royal nature. Indigo children have few friends because few children share similar characteristics. When indigo children find themselves alone in a crowd they will withdraw from people around them, feeling misunderstood.
Another reason for education complications is the way indigo children learn. They are natural bright, are often in accelerated learning programs for the gifted and talented. Their creative mind can easily grasp on concepts and instructions, spotting and pointing out a better way of doing something.
As bright and creative as these children, they are easily distracted and bored. This difficulty makes it difficult for a teacher to keep the child interested and focused on their education. Indigo children are more willing to quarrel with a teacher or a parent then most children. A teacher be able to get pass this, for they will be rewarded with an excellent student. Indigo children can make excellent students because they are known to have an excellent memory, fast learners, and are creative. The children are so bright
they are bored easily. Their interests focus on the arts, humanities, music, and communication.
Aside from social and educational struggles, these children are set apart from the normal crowd for their supernatural tendency and interest in New Age era. Indigo children are well known for their interest with psychic abilities. These abilities include telepathic communication, amazing healing powers, foretelling the future, “acute intuition” (Leland) and telekinesis skills. The New Age era involves spiritual believes and faith healing. In the spiritual aspect indigo children tend to believe in ghosts, angels, and reincarnation. Because of social disapproval of psychic abilities many indigo children will hide their special powers or fear them.
Many indigo children have ADD or ADHD. “They are less able to regulate or inhibit their behavior and have trouble with "executive functions," such as organizing, planning, executing and monitoring their thoughts, feelings and actions.” (Anderson)
Children that have ADD or ADHD and are left untreated, often have a hard time as an adult. Adults with ADD or ADHD will find themselves with low paying jobs and struggle with marriage.
ADD affects only eight percent of children, but it very common for indigo children. Indigo children often are unable to stand in line because they lack patience, caused by their personality. The cure for the disability is drugs; the most common is Ritalin. Both parents and indigo children feel taking drugs is not the answer. The parents and children feel uneasy having to be dependent on medicine. The parents believe in self control and not treating indigo children like the children have a disability.
Many parents see their highly energetic kids have a problem, a disability. This is a misunderstood concept. Among the indigo supporters, it is agreed that science is slow to change and is extremely behind understanding spiritual practices like meditation. Without science understanding or even accepting how spiritual practices affect indigo children, science is unable to understand the phenomena of indigo children. Slow change is the reason for ignorance of the needs of the indigo children.
Each generation of children have different problems and challenges to conquer. Each previous generation have to learn to understand, accept and deal with the new generation’s gifts and flaws. Indigo children and their believers hope to bring more peace and unite the world. They believed these children will grow up to “a world based upon compassion not competition” (Twyman). Unfortunately, indigo children must win over the skeptics. Parents have to learn the signs of their seemingly misbehaving children in order to help indigos in their school work so they can succeed in life and fulfill their foretold dreams of world peace.
