My friend said to me today that he received a person's memory. (it was a sad one) Like the book, "The Giver."Is this considered empathy? He wants to know. Thanks (on second thought.... could it be telepathy...?) It wasn't a thought, though.

Seeing as the thought or memory was based on an emotion it might be Empathy. That memory might be the root or source of the emotion that person is feeling.

I would say telepathy. Memories are most certaintly thoughts before they are emotions. Emotions are merely perceptions. Like pain and or tickling, just purely internal. Thoughts are the basis of pretty much everything about the human experience. Relaly, without thought, emotion breaks down to just instinct. So anyways, even if Empathyand telepathy are seperate enough to be considered completely indpendant phenomena, a memory, in my oppinion, is still comprised primarily of concepts/thoughts. Emotion will not describe color. it will not describe even sequences and it will not fill the details that memories require o be memories.
Now, I kindof agree with what Mr. Experiemnt said: I wouldn't say memories are based on emotion - But memories involving strong sensations are often linked to those sensations. There-fore memories can be linked to emotions. There-fore empathy could technicaly be the primary active ability here. Technicaly, empathy and telepathy, at least human to human applications, seem to be something we naturaly do at a sub-conscious/un-conscious level.
So if you where to emphaticaly sense an emotion or sproject an emotion itno a specific mind, and that mind, conscious or sub-consciously, brought up the memory at that moment, then the memory itself might hypotheticaly be shared by both minds along with the emotion. I think that would make sence sicne it's the very nature of the human mind and the process by which we form oppinions to link related concepts together into compiled ideas and thoughts, and, with even more complex amalgamations of concepts oppinions, eliefs, and personnality traits. (Although the latter is also influenced by genetic predispossions and instinct.)

I would have to say either. If it is causing emotion, it would be empathy as an effect to you, but the cause is telepathy. If it is very old, and not remembered much by the "subject" then it would maybe by both cause telepathy and effect telepathy.
