I think I have a possibility.
Salt might be more absorbant to change, and holding ideas in the salt. This is like hot water kind of. The media has advertised that garlic is used to ward away "vampires" and salt is used for cleansing of evil. When people get this in their head they subconciously use psionics to give the salt or garlic this property to a small extent, although I doubt you'll turn an evil spirit or evil vampire to dust with the two.

Or It could be that salt and garlic just have more psi in them then other objects and have "positive" energy instead of "negitive" energy.

Well once the draculas heard that the garlic was evil for them, they got scared of it and imagined what it would do to them if they were affected, so that at least was a 2-times powered effect, and i believe it required no positive energy... Just energy. And plus, garlic breath is a powerful thing, however you use it

With salt, i just assume it has a higher concentrarion of psi.. I don't see it as positive or negative energy.

I look at this from an Alchemic point of view...the three main things that make up anything are Mercury Sulfur and Salt...Spirit soul and body...the body holds the spirit and soul together in a physical form naturally they called the body salt for some reason.... salt holds and abnormal amount of energy.Like most metals especially aluminum it sucks energy up like a sponge...sorry i tend to run at the mouth if i am wrong in this belief please feel free to correct me.
