The Media, Science and the word Psychic

This really ticks me off. The word 'psychic' has been soo abused by the media AND by science that it doesn't portray what it used to portray. When you walk up to someone and say "I'm psychic", their first initial thought is wwiiiieeerrrrdo. It's either that or something that has to do with you being a lunatic. Because soo many people rely on science now, the idea of being psychic seems so... ... ... retarded to most people. Science has made it seem like psychics don't exist. Whenever someone comes and says that they are psychic they always ask for proof and if it cannot be explained through science.. it doesn't exist. Why can't they just admit that they cannot solve this mystery. It doesn't have to be proven by science to be real.

As for the media.. don't even get me started. When you say to someone "I'm psychic", some of them will initally think Mrs. Cleo or someone that reads tarrot cards or looks into a crystal ball to see your future. IT ISN'T ALWAYS LIKE THAT.. Because of that we now have resorted to useing a different term. We call ourselves Psions just do differenciate us from Them (Those that rely on tarrot cards, crystal balls, and connections with dieties to perform psychic abilities). Also, whenever you identify yourself as being psychic people, especially Christians, say that you're demonically possessed. You go through a long process of how your soul will be sent to hell and all of that. When you go and tell someone that you're psionic they go [you]HUH?.. What's that?[/b][/you] Then you have to say that you're psychic... That just really makes me soooo soo very mad.

You become an outsider to your own people, friends, family and collegues. So much changes all because of one word and it's application in today's society. I JUST HATE THAT..

Yeah.. I've read your response ... I'm just posting it throughout all the psionic communities that I like. I want to get as many peoples opinions as I can, and a majority agree with me.

I agree with you xp, I personally haven't told anyone that I am a psion because first of all I am a crappy spion and second because it would turn me into an outsider.

The media highly annoys me because it's responsible for all the fear, doubt and anger we psionics get from people. Books, tv shows, movies, fake internet sites all lie and twist the truth about psionics.

They show us being scared of out minds about our abilites. They show us doing things, without any training that NO ONE can do. They show us abusing our powers to hurt the public or countries. We are shown as superheros. There are hundreds of bad examples of where the reality of us is twisted.

Of course we must understand and remember psionics in the media are usually shown as fictional characters. Most people know this. Unforunately some do not. This can be good and bad. Many of us psionics have been attracted to psi because of the media, but we come in with wrong ideas. We come, thinking this training will be easy and you can then do something great. No one knows the years and years of hard, daily work that is invovled. Now I know if we told that truth many wouldn't join.

All in all I don't pay much attention to the media when it comes to the topic of pyschic abilities.

I know what you both mean... I wasn't attracted to psionics because of media though.
