Well, being dumb ol' me, I decided to try out something. There are certain files called .bootskin files, and I decided to try to run a Windows XP bootskin on my Vista, and it's from a program. Well, Guess what happened?! My computer crashed. I had to do a system restore, and I lost almost everything I've done in the past 10 days. If you have any tells of this, please tell. And don't, what-so-ever, mess with startup files. Or bootup files.

Unless you know what you are doing... I have screwed with these files and have pimped out my computer. You just gotta learn how to not break them  |

All I know is how to check e-mails and browse the internet for information which is technically useless.
Though this is probally all I will ever need to know how to do.

Well, messing with startup files is bad enough. Messing with the registry with random old XP codes on Vista means OMGBOOMCRASH, but I should get Linux.

If you still want to try editing your boot image, I'd suggest using Stardock BootSkin. It's a freeware program (that won't screw up your computer) with thousands of user-submitted skins. It's pretty awesome. ^_^

I mess with my startup stuff all the time. what's the big deal? you just gotta learn to rely on instinct. If you are use to messing with bootup files for xp, vista should be able a little easy to learn. I mean, vista starts up using linux operating files anyway.
Yeah, if you are gonna go to linux, I suggest ubuntu... but, you oughta do some research on the way things work first.
Like darin said, use stardock. I recommend it!

Messing with the registry with random old XP codes on Vista means OMGBOOMCRASH, but I should get Linux. !!!!LINUX ROCKS!!!! i have Ubuntu on a cd, hanvt got to try it out yet, but what i saw them do at the tutorials, is much cooler than windows. i have 2 computers at home doing nothing (95, and 98) the 98 crashed and needs a new motherboard (but they dont make win98 parts anymore) and the 95 cant be used cause they threw out the mouse and the mouse port in that computer is different. im gonna try and get a new mother board just so i can use the Linux and the cool thing about Linux, if you break something on one part, everything else still works, then you can fix or get a new thing from another user. and there are only 6 viruses for Linux, 4 are theoretical (and havnt been proven) one was out, but someone made a virus that fixed it and so now there are no viruses |

Hee hee I remember in the good old days of win95 when I got a hex editor on explorer.exe to change what the error messages say pffff Linux is for losers, BSD is the way forwards and there are only 6 viruses for Linux, 4 are theoretical (and havnt been proven) one was out, but someone made a virus that fixed it and so now there are no viruses Well thats a load of rubbish there are tons of viruses for every OS out there. People seem to think Linux is some amazing hacker proof OS when really its quite the oposite. Any full featured OS is going to be full of holes and as soon as it released people will be making viruses for it. |
