How hard is it to run your own site/forum?
I would like to try this out, just because there are so many things I disagree with on this site and others, that I'd like to be able to do it on my own.
How did you guys advertise? What came first, the site or the forum? Anyone have any ideas for my "gimmick" or "sales pitch?" What about a name? What host do you use? I like Blogspot, or some other blog, just because it is much simpler.
NOTE: This is not just for the owner of the site. This is intended for anyone owning a site, or just anyone with any good ideas. Thanks!!

Yes and no. It's really like asking if riding a bike is hard. It's hard to learn at first, but once you learn how to balance and pedel, you can ride a bike. Running a site is no different. It takes time, energy, a bit of thought and creativeness, and drive to keep on even when it gets hard. The first thing I beg people to do is to wait until you have the entire site done, I mean as complete as you can get it before you even start to think about that "a" word. As for how to do it: basically you can post on boards that allow you, note that astral society doesn't, about your site. Add your link to your signature on all site and on your profile. Even put your site on such things as myspace or a non psi site. Tell your friends about the site. Then go to psi links and go to all 130 some sites and either see if there is a way to submit your site or email the owner and ask them to trade links. Well I started out with msn groups (stop laughing for those who know what that is) Then I met a guy who coded the main site (a different one than the free webs) and found me this forum. I did the articles, the advertising, and the handling of the forum. He did coding a two articles. So I guess the forum came first, but I would say if I had to do it all over again, focus on the main site and then the forum then advertise. Be creative. Have a meaning to your site other than "here's what I know about psionics" Have something to offer. Have a service or something to teach or a way to teach that no one else does. My pitch is my site is one of the few, helpful places for a newbie to go and won't get their head bitten off because they are a newbie. psiworld was created because I couldn't do anymore on msn groups until I had a name. So, yeah you can do better. If you are looking at blogs, shop around and see who offers the best services Now here are a few articles I would like you to take a look at: www.freewebs.com/jedikaren/making.htmthepsiworld.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=link&action=display&thread=1192497460

I've semi-ran a forum. I was the Admin(clan leader) with Hellfire010, and we had to run this forum for runescape. It was fun in all, and our clan name was Volatis Bestila Immortilis. Brownie points if you know what that means.
It was pretty hard. I got a lot of PM's, questions, and then some threads that had to be moved. Talk about busy. Then I had about 150 friends on my friend list from friends from the clan, and that got kind of annoying. Ahh, the old days.... bring back so many memories. I have to say, this forum reminds me of our old forum, it's the exact same colour.

Thank you everyone!
JK, those articles were very helpful, and I agree, the site should be done (or as done as it can be) before advertising. I have seen too many sites that are rearanging everything every other day. It makes the owners look like idiots (no offense).

What do I do to get articles? Do I just ask the author of the article or do I need to ask the owner of the site?

It's much better if you write your own articles rather than take a whole bunch of other articles. If the members of your site have articles they want to submit, then that's ok.

Do NOT make a website unless you are willing to pay every waking moment of your life to it.

I do not have the time to Run/Create a site.
Though I have alot of connections. Try getting a group of people. I have someone making the Site, someone making the Forum, someone making the Features etc.
Since I only have time to get on the computer to posts a few posts and read a few pms.

I think it works really well that way, however I would really need to be involved...because I am a control freak.

it depends on how big your site is. I use to do everything myself when I only had a few hundred, but now I have to have mod and sometime they get stuff that I would never get, seeing how some board I rarely visit.

What I did was just do away with the boards I didn't know anything about.
