I posted this in my intro on the introductions page, but I wanted to post it here, too.
I have a bit of a problem with shielding. I can easily create a shield, a strong one that keeps most people from even realizing I'm there. (Scared a lot of people like that. They didn't notice me until I spoke)
But it takes a lot of effort to lower the shield. I seem to raise it subconsciously, probably a habit left over from before I was able to control my empathy to keep my mind from being overwhelmed.
Even when I'm meditating and completely relaxed, it takes serious concentration to lower the shield, and as soon as I stop thinking about it, the shield raises again on its own.
Any ideas on how to make it easier to lower the shield? Or how to stop myself from doing it without thinking?

when creating a shield, program it to have active and dormant modes.

I seemed to have that problem for a while. Like eldurner said, just program it to have active and dormant modes, and be able to change the modes quickly. Active mode should be full power, and dormant should be just there, not really doing anything. And you must be pretty good at shielding, because it takes a pretty good programmer to hide your presence.

Cu, that is not always the case. My shields are impossible for me to lower. I have tried nonstop for hours to lower them, using the full force of my will. The most that I have ever done is render them harmless to others, and let one or two people through them.
Kirana, if you would like, I would not mind trying to help you out, though you do have quite a bit more experience than me in terms of how long you have been doing this. Perhaps I can help though, perhaps not.

Brilenus, I know your shields are powerful. It's reallllllyyyyyy hard to lower shields like that. All you can do is try, as much as you can, and hope that it will work. Like Brilenus said also, if that doesn't work, try to make it harmless to everyone, and let people through it if they want.
(Stupid spell check thing, it says Brilenus is spelled Futileness -_-)

Hey, I'll take any help I can get, Brilenus As for programming it, I don't see how I can do that if I'm not even aware that I'm raising the shield. If I put every ounce of concentration I have into it, I can lower it, but as soon as I stop thinking about it, the shield goes right back up to full strength. I guess my shields don't listen very well ;D

Cu, my shields are not all that powerful at all compared to some of the ones I have seen. My mentality is what keeps me from lowering them. (Nice, my name confuses the computer ) Kirana, you can always try moddifying the shield even though it already exists. If I did not do that, I would be making and destroying so many things it would give me endless migranes. Also, perhaps you are just not very relaxed around people, thus your mind creates the shield without being told to, and will not let it go down. I have that happen all the time because I am never relaxed around people. At any rate, I would be more than willing to help in any way possible.

You could use force to take the shield down. Visualize it exploding, shattering, collapsing...

When you program it, just program it going down with a kill code. Something that's not commonly said (for example asdfghjkl [as-duff-ghuhj-kuhl]). For your existing shields...you could just cut them off from their power source. Or have someone else destroy them.

I don't know anyone that could try and take my shields down. As for killing the power source I can't exactly tell what it draws on for energy. My shield kinda developed on its own if that makes sense. Its kinda hard to explain.

It's not too hard to see where it gets its power. Just trace it back to the power source. But let's say that you can't do that. You seem to be pretty good at energy manipulation, why don't you just make another shield around the one you have that absorbs any energy that tries to pass through it. It'll cut off your first shield's power source, what ever it is. Make sure to program the kill code into the new shield, so that when the first one is shrivelled up and dead, you can get rid of the second one.
