I will also provide links to books and other suggested reading material to learn more if you are interested.

I. What is Reiki?
Reiki is a combination of two words from Japan. Rei means spirit or divine, along those lines. Ki means energy. Together it means Spirit Energy or Divine Energy. That is just a general idea. Ki could also be seen as life force energy and rei more specifically could be seen as “Higher Power” or “God.” In the end it is all the same, it is just power spiritually guided.
How can it relate to Psi? Psi is energy manipulation, reiki is similar in that, except it is for healing purposes and can only be used for healing purposes. However, it can help you better use energy.
Reiki is a “hands on” but it can also be hands off healing system from Japan founded by Dr. Usui. It is not a religion, even if it can be spiritual in nature. Whether you believe in God(s) or not, it can still be use by anyone. It is also very simple; it does not require much effort, except sometimes meditation. What makes it different from other healing systems? You have to be attuned (read section IV), there is no way to perform Reiki unless you get attuned, you can perform something similar, but it is not Reiki.
One thing about Reiki, do not stop taking your medications, do not stop seeing a doctor. Reiki is meant to help, but it cannot truly substitute anything. However it has been proven to help cancer patients in healing. They still need their medication but they are not so exhausted and such with the help of Reiki. Reiki has been proven to help provide cures to people’s sickness.
II. History of Reiki
There are many speculations upon where Reiki came from with no to little confirmation upon these ideas. Some people believes that it originates from Buddhism, whichever the case, Reiki remains religiously neutral and can be easily combined with any faith. Reiki is relatively new, only being introduced in the early 1900’s, sometime after 1914. Reiki is practiced in Europe, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the world.
However, the ‘myth’ of how Dr. Usui came to discover Reiki is this: He was praying and fasting for many days at Mt. Kurama when he had a mystical experience and that is how he learned Reiki. Dr. Usui states that it “is something original and cannot be compared with any other (spiritual) path in the world.”
Reiki continued to grow and Dr. Usui added the Reiki Ideals. Dr. Hayashi added the standard hand positions (section V), the three degrees, and their attunement process. Mrs. Takata (from Hawaii) added a fee process to help make people feel grateful and a period of time before each attunement. However there are now varieties with Reiki as with all things, the teachings changed. One example is that the third degree was divided into two parts, the “third” degree and the “Master’s” degree.

III. The Reiki Ideals
The secret art of inviting happiness
The miraculous medicine of all diseases
Just for today, do not anger
Do not worry and be filled with gratitude
Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people.
Every morning and evening, join your hands in prayer.
Pray these words to your heart
and chant these words with your mouth
Usui Reiki Treatment for the improvement of body and mind
The founder , Usui Mikao
These ideals were added for a spiritual balance of Reiki.
IV. Learning Reiki
Reiki can be learned by anyone. It is simple, easy, and effective in healing oneself and others. Reiki does not depend on any way of life you come from or any spiritual path you are on. It is for everyone. While Reiki is not well known partially due to the relative newness, but it is quickly becoming wide spread.
Attunements are given by Reiki Masters and the only way to be able to use Reiki. The attunements are being attuned to the Reiki energy through the “crown.” Generally there is the three degrees (or a fourth for Master), Reiki I, II, III and or Masters. Reiki I is the introduction of the history, learning to heal yourself and others and a very hands on experience. Reiki II is more for distant healing, with learning the symbols. Reiki III sometimes Masters is included with it, but the person is generally allowed to teach others about Reiki as well as attune others. Just a simple Reiki I attunement will do, and the attunement will greatly give benefits to your life. It helps bring balance emotional, physically, mentally as well as healing those aspects.
Each level of attunement all require money to take but the purpose was to make you grateful as (from what I’ve heard that some people who received it were not grateful and never used it to help others or themselves). Some people also require amounts of time before each attunement or hours of Reiki done. You will have to ask these questions of the Reiki Master who you are receiving the attunement from. Each attunement will come and give more skills as well as knowledge of Reiki. Some which you can read in a book, but that does mean you can get the attunement from reading a book. Once you are attuned, you have it for life, though you can always be reattuned.
What about distance attunements? Distance attunements are getting attunements from a distance, like being in France and getting an attunement while in America. I would not trust those, though from what it sounds like, people do receive benefits from it. I suggest you do not waste your money on it because as I type this, it’s still experimental. The problem is that not all of the attunement can be given from the distance because it must be given by the hands.
The Reiki attunement sometimes adds abilities that a person did not have. Some people have seen auras, angels, met their spirit guides through Reiki. Please do not expected that you will have all of these if you get the Reiki attunement. The attunement can start a healing process for the body and the soul, toxins, emotions, anything problematic could be dealt with. Also drinking water is very important to the Reiki healer before and after, even possibly during a treatment. It seems the user gets very thirsty afterwards, it has happened to me. It is also a way for the body to get rid of any toxins.
V. My Personal Experiences
The first time I got the attunement, I had my eyes closed and when the Reiki Master touched my shoulders, these huge gigantic light appeared and I wondered what was going on. Every time she touched me the light would appear so large and strong, compared to my own. I think it's just that connection and because she has been doing it so long that her "light" is greater. Also during the attunement, my spirit guide decided to reveal himself. I've been aware of him for a while, but never in that form. He always wore a human-ish shape. He said something about now was the time he was going to reveal himself. He is of great aid when I do Reiki. Afterwards, I could see auras/energy bodies much better than I used to. It actually seems to get stronger for people who have been attuned to Reiki. I'm not sure how to explain it fully but I plan on investigating it more.
When I was healing others I got the feeling of warmth in my hands or tingling. Some people give different 'feelings' off from their use of the energy, people describe my hands with the Reiki as calming and soothing. The pain in my knees goes away when I do Reiki on myself. I use it sometimes to calm myself and it helps wonders. What I do is that I place my hands over my heart and solar plexus and reiki myself so that the reiki goes where it needs to. I think it has also helped me boost my confidence up to.
As a key note, each experience is different. What is important is that you try to through out any expectations. Do not expect hocus pocus that you will heal cancer instantly, meet spirit guides, and see auras, etcetera though it can happen. My experience will probably be very different from yours. In the class that I was in, each experience was different, as was each healing unique.
