Communication
Nov.9,2005
Communication is so vitally important. A lot of people take it for granted. When it comes to communication or lack there of, it can cause so many conflicts, problems, misunderstandings, inaccuracies, wars, hatreds ect.... You can start to see what I am getting at. When people are communicating on a level of understanding between each other then this is where communication is excelling. Now this doesn’t mean you have to agree with the person you are talking with. It just means that both parties have an understanding of each other, where they stand and can make proper assessments of the situation at hand with out improperly making erroneous conclusions about what one person may or may not be implying/saying. Let’s use for an example two different cultures; let’s say someone from America and someone from Japan. Both are English speaking people. But the context of what they say and what they mean may get misconstrued or misinterpreted or both. They may imply something and the other take it completely the wrong way that which was not originally intended. Then this leads to further misunderstandings and heated words. Then name calling starts or just all out ignoring the person and you see how this is ultimately going to end. A perfectly open communication process when started has now deteriorated into something less desirable all because of the lack of a healthy “communication” process.
People must be more open, ask more questions and stay away from jumping to conclusions or outright assuming something is so, without further clarification. You ever hear the infamous quote of, “Patience is a virtue”? Well when it comes to the communication process it is essential. With out patience how can one expect the communication process to work? With patience comes understanding. Be in total understanding of someone’s disposition and if you are not sure of what they mean, do not hesitate to ask for further clarification. This is part ensuring the communication process is working and flowing in a manner where it does not degrade and breaks down the communication process. Always remember communication is a two way street. It is better to ask, then to not ask and assume. There is no harm in asking what the person means. Again this is just part of enacting and ensuring a healthy communication process is attained. So remember next time when you are talking with someone you like, dislike or have no personal taste one way or the other, ensure the communication doesn’t break down and always make sure you know where the other person is coming from and you make sure what you say is taken in the way and manner you are trying to convey.
