Reflecting upon Choice
This is my attempt to stay away and not fall to the temptation of sleeping the rest of the afternoon and miss out on classes, so do not expect anything too genius from me.
To day to day, we make hundreds of thousands of choices, many of these choices we are not aware of. Some of these choices are made in a spilt second, some in a few minutes, and some of these choice mull in the subconscious of our mind, slowly to be answered. As a Jedi, we are taught to be attentive of everything from what we ate, to what we say, to what we feel or think. A Jedi is trained to become very aware of the thoughts and emotions that person has, to understand each thought; to learn how said thoughts could influence them. The choices we make are in thought form and therefore should receive the same amount of awareness.
We take it for granted that we choose to wear the blue shirt instead of the red shirt because that top matches better with the jeans. What we do not realize is that many of these choices are controlled by society, by our environment, and by our view of the world. We choice the blue shirt because people are work seems to like blue to look cool and in control, rather than red which signifies we crave to be looked at and admired. It is these little choices that control who we are.
Being a Jedi is to branch out, to put space between you and society. You learn to think for yourself, learn why you did not think for yourself and why others continue to be a sheep in a crowd. Simply making that choice to be a Jedi is the first step of self awareness and awareness to others.
By digging through the illusion meaning to small, seemingly unimportant decisions, a Jedi can learn how to intelligently approach the bigger, life altering choices in life, such as to be on the “light” or “dark” side. Although, the older Jedi well understand there is no true “side” to the Force or to life, let me enlighten the younger, newer people. There is no side to the Force or even to life. It is simply how you act, think, and feeling. You decisions in life help define who you are and what you believe in. So when you decide to help an old lady or take time out to drive a friend to the store some people would consider you to be on the “light side” base on your actions. When you decide to get drunk, smash a window with a pool ball, and then run around, yelling at the top of your voice, people would consider you to act “darkly”.
There are slightly less eventful choices we must makes that are just important and never get as much thought as the choice needed. An example of this is when to get into a fight. It has been shown over and over, to stay out of the fight is far safer and a wiser decision and yet few of us come to the conclusion, while at the scene. The fight can be through words, typed or not, or through physical contact. A Jedi is taught patience and to choose the correct answer often requires some patience and control of one’s emotions.
So when to practice what I am talking about, spend a week, being conscious of everything you do and find out why you do it. Ask yourself the question: am I doing this because I want to or am I doing this so I will be socially accepted. Please understand if the answer is the second one, that it is not always a bad reason, but one that requires extra thought and comprehending.
