XD Lured you in, didn't I ? Anyways, this is more like my opinion. It is not a true article. However, I would love it if you guys argued with me, told me what you agree upon, disagree, think I'm to extremist, etc. It is never going on JediKaren's site, it isn't psi. You guys will see!
Why is grammar and spelling so important to me? Let me outline it why it means so much to me.
First of all, basic grammar is meaningful to any well done writing. It involves proper punctuation like periods and question marks. It also involves capitalization at the beginning of a sentence. This also means no run-on sentences. It makes the post visually appealing. This is just the area I mean about grammar. Do I care if you can make compound sentences? No, that is not important to me since the colons, semi-colons, commas, and dashes may and can get a bit confusing and does not look right in the wrong places. I don't even care if you start a sentence with but or because.
The same goes with spelling, having words spelt write makes what the author is trying to say readable. I am an avid and vigorous reader however, when I see a poorly written post I just do not bother reading, because it is too much for my brain to try to read. My brain goes on editing mode, wanting to capitalize and put punctuation where it should be.
Also was must not be forgotten is this – that this is the World Wide Web and that everyone can view what has been written. I am not saying that there will be someone like me who wants to edit a post so vigorously, no, it is something more. Speaking l33t is not good, since there are many like me who do not understand whatever is being said. While I do know a few abbreviations; I look at it like this, “This is a post. Like an argument, a point, or a question, which people will read and view, I want what I am saying understood by all.”
Hey I am all cool if someone is talking on the internet to their friends and using shortened words like “please, ty, etcetera,” but that is instant messenger. I’m a little bit more lenient towards chatrooms, especially depending upon the type of chatroom. I’m really sorry folks, but I have my hands tied learning French and Italian, with English my first language.
What is this about caps? I hate when a post or a sentence is written in caps, unless it is like a title to some article. It sounds like someone is yelling at me and I abhor being yelled at. There are other ways to make what is being said stand out, highlighting the text with a background if possible, bolding it, italicize it, underline it, or a combination of all. Change the height of it, even aligning it towards right, left, or center makes a big difference.
Another thing, if a person has time to write entire sentence and write “please” somewhere in it, which is just annoying. They write an entire sentence or paragraph and they shorten one word? Though this does not annoy me as much as all caps, in fact, this is the least upon my list of “I hate!”
Occasionally I spell words wrong, in fact, though occasionally will be spelled correctly, I generally misspell that word (thank heavens for spell check). I am fine with misspelling words every once in a while. My point still stands, while it is ok to misspell a word, or even have a typo (my hands fly across the keyword, I think I type around 60-65 words per minute when copying, not when I am writing down my own thoughts). I also love my instant messenger Pidgin, it automatically corrects many of my words and common typos, it isn’t foolproof though, it only has what is plugged in, and still that is wonderful for me! Again as I said, as long as someone does not murder the word so much that I go “what the heck?” It is understandable even more so if someone is foreign, the guy I love is foreign and he constantly has typos, even more so when he is tired. Though I have to say, some typos are utterly hilarious, like when my friend meant to type “good luck” and instead wrote “good lick” and hit enter. Get my point? My brain sometimes just automatically corrects such minor mistakes. Maybe whoever reads this gets it or not, but this is the way I am.
The point is, when making a post, on a forum, there is some question, argument, agreement, statement, going on! Should it not be easy to read and understandable and if sometimes lengthy? Even more so when it comes to writing an article or with a website.
And please for Pete’s sake; do not go adding me to instant messenger just to bother me. >.> I’ve put ask me for most of my instant messengers. = ) I am tired of people contacting me with such poor grammar that gives me headaches.
