I'd like to see all of this happen..... anyway. What I'm saying is that the likelihood of something like that occuring on such a large scale is just very... low. If indeed this does happen and our abilities become enhanced, I for one would not get bored. I'd constantly be searching out others that had some type of active ability and God knows what I plan on doing with them.
Also.. if it does go down the way peope are talking about it, then I doubt that schools would teach psionics. The reason being that something like that occuring out of the blue and on a large scale would definitely frighten lots and lots of people. We would have worldwide pandamonium. People like us (the enhanced ones... next generation of humanity.. homosuperior, if you will) will be hunted down, looked down upon... pushed away (for the most part) because we are different and new and misunderstood. You also know that science would be after us as well. As I said before, it'll be pandamonium. Still though, I would enjoy it. I think I'll get into the field of bounty hunting and assassin for hire... simply because that's where my best skills lie.. Its money, and at a time like that, bounty hunters and assassins will be in high demand (if you know what I mean).

What i see is: If the Mayans were so smart, how were they wiped out? Second: They probably just go through cycles due to zodiac thingys. Third: Everyone stops thinking in advance after a while. What use does it have to keep on making a calendar that' s so far away? I mean, My OS only goes to 2099. Is something going to happen then?
I'd like it to be as Mr E said. Just something to motivate us and drive us to excel.

Every race comes to an end, even the most powerful empires fall. To name two, the Romans and the British. It's inevitable that after a period of time war or revolutionary leaders or rebellion or natural causes will bring the end to a race, Mayans included.

Something may happen. Some say some planet called Nibiru will come, some say we will all die from some disease, some say that it's the day the Anti-Christ will rise up in the Synogouge of the Jewish, and claim to be Jesus. Who knows? It can all happen, but it might not.

1) They weren't wiped out. They "vanished" into the forests. Some have said that they ascended to a void, and will return for us when the time has come. 2) They didn't have "zodiacs", but they had something similar - they did have names for cycles, like they named their days and months. But this is like how we have names for our Weekdays (Sunday, Monday) and Months (January February). But it is interesting you mention that, because we have found a single data in Mayan form which goes *beyond* the baktuns (that is, the "end date" is just when they run out of baktuns), and keeps going for several even bigger cycles. This is like if you look at our calendar, and say "Oh, we stop counting millenia after 9000, because we run out" but really, we just add another digit on and call it an eon (I may be wrong here). 3) Precisely. In fact, the Mayans rarely kept track of the current Baktun because nobody lives that long. They were only used for record keeping of previous generations. But there is a very interesting thing to note about the mayan calendar. Unlike our current calendar (called the Gregorian Calendar), it wasn't based on a beginning (e.g. 1AD, the year of Christ), theirs was based on an end. Not to mention, their calendar was a lot more accurate than ours, too. They set that ending on December 2012 (scholars debate whether its' 21 or 23, but the general consensus seems to be 21), and said that on this date, the Sacred Tree will form a bridge to the world and the underworld, and Lord Pacal will ascend to it. Scholars have found that this great tree refers to the conjunction between the Milky Way and what astronomers call the Dark Rift - a dark band across the sky (like the opposite of the milky way). Lord Pacal is a god to the Mayans, very muc a Sun God, and as it turns out, the Sun enters this intersection on this date, 2012-12-21. Some excellent references for you guys, so that you actually read and learn something, rather than just spreading "fluff': John Major Jenkins is a leading scholor in Mayan studies. Here is his website explaining the astronomical significance of this end date: www.levity.com/eschaton/Why2012.htmlAn introduction to the Mayan Calendar. edj.net/mc2012/fap4.htmlAn explanation about the "correlation date" - trying to figure out how our calendar lines up with the Mayan calendar, so that we can determine if the date is on the 21st or the 23rd. members.shaw.ca/mjfinley/corr.htmlThe 13-moon calendar, a calendar with emphasis on spirituality and nature. Based a bit on the Mayan Calendar, with a lot of really great references to the Mayan Calendar and the prophecies surrounding it. www.13moon.com/time-is-art.htm

The Mayans thought the world would end in December, 2012. apparently having something to do with aliens or whatnot.. It's what the series X-Files is based upon, by the way.
Er, personally I do not believe this, but who knows. There are tons of other stuff associated with 2012 as well, but I can't quite remember it.

lets end this whole topic by answering the question. 2012 is a year. Or more specifically, it is the number following 2011 and preceding 2013, or in the ternary counting system, preceding 2020

I think that we can take this to our advantage and be determined to increase our level of psi skill whether this is real or conspiracy.

The reason why there is so much ... disagreement over 2012 is because of all the events in the past. There has been multiple predictions on the end of the world, a new age, Christ coming again (for those who believe in Christianity), etc. etc. etc. That's the main reason why most sceptics on this topic are... well... sceptical. It's because it's been /done/ so many times in the past that it gets old after awhile.
2012 being the end of the Mayan calender may have some effect but it could also be that the Mayans did not make it so it could be an endless year counting system. Some say, or are willing to believe that Christ will come down on this date. Yet again. This may be true but due to the predictions of Christ coming in the past, many stay sceptical. Some believe that this may be the coming of a new Magical or Psionic Era. This may be more likely since as far as my knowledge goes I cannot see any date in which Magic or psionics has been practiced more. Although some might say this prediction only comes from all of the other theories on 2012.
On a more scientifical note, 2012 may be the day where global warming is at its worst. According to Al Gore, and various other predictions on the expodential growth of global warming this may be true, there could possibly be a new ice age at that time, or the current could change changing the world drastically. With the ever, expodential growth in nano technoligy, some scientists or theorists say that we could be living in a new Singular age in which humans are on par with Technoligy. They say we will by then be living in our own virtual worlds with whatever we desire to create or such. Also, virus's will be cured due to nano robots.
Anyway. This could all be mumbo jumbo and hype but 2012 does seem to be a significant age no matter how you look at it and it may have the worth to just be considered since almost all theories focus on this date while in the past it was much more scattered.

This does remind me of one interesting tidbit I picked up from a teacher of mine who has his Doctors in the Earth Sciences. Apparently, on 2012 the world is supposed to shift polarity. That is to say, whereas our compasses currently point North, on 2012 and on for the next several millenia, our compasses will begin pointing South instead.
Now, you might think this is no biggy, but just a small heads up that the last time this happened, it created the Sahara Desert out of a very lush forest.
