I had to write an essay for a class. It was a good question so I put it here along with my essay. (note I don't nessecarily believe everything in this essay)
You will respond to this quotation by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe:
The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it.
During the Westward Movement, settlers were often at odds with the Native Americans. Their different cultures and patterns of land use clashed. Is it just for one person or group to own vast resources while others are impoverished? Cite examples from history, literature, or experience that support your thesis.
The only way someone can live a good life, is at the expense of others. As many people as possible should be able to live enjoyable lives. This means someone needs to take a fall. Examples are abundant everywhere, from Rome to modern life. Loss is the only path to gain.
In Rome, many were prosperous and happy, but this success only came with the enslavement of others. Slavery was common and socially accepted. Slaves did all the hard work. In doing so this let a great many people live good lives. This “injustice”, this inequality of man, was in fact justified because it lead to the greater good of the society.
When the gladiators rebelled in Rome, they were receiving the possibility of a greater life. This act of freedom came at the cost of many law abiding citizens. The gladiators rebelled in selfishness. Their “enslavement” was really a good thing for everyone. They never had to worry about being homeless or not getting food to eat. They were even famous, brought much revenue to the roman empire. There gain came at the loss of many more.
If you achieve great wealth and affluence, you caused so many others to live in poverty. This is because there is only so much money in the world. If you have more money than average, that’s money that other people can’t have. The mere act of being rich is causing others to be poor. However, this is acceptable. The poor are only in such a state because the rich made better decisions. It is only fair and “just” that the wise receive what they earn. To take it away would be “injustice”
Men will always be divided by the amount of their worldly possessions. It would be an “injustice” if they were not. A separation of classes based on wealth leads to those groups feeling a sense of brotherhood with others of the same class. This seeming “injustice,” is the greatest “justice of all.
