This month of November is a novelists chance to achieve one 50,000 word novel in 30 days. I don't know why but I decided to enter in the contest... 10 Days Late . Now I'm writting my butt off. I'll post everything I type. What I'm going to post underneath is what I did in 2 yes 2 days. Like I said I was working my butt off. One more thing, things like indents weren't always transfered. Finished version will be posted on my website.
It was raining and the day was so riddled with clouds that it had looked like night. There was emptiness everywhere. The ground was a reflective surface that showed the sky. For miles around there was nothing but emptiness. In one area stood a man , in the prime of his life. Somewhat of an average looking guy that wore a white cloak. A woman, much like him, stood next to him. They looked at each other then into the void around them.
Ring! Ring! - Ring! Ring!
Rang the alarm clock. The man got up out of his bed and turned of the clock. He hurriedly got dressed, left his room and quickly made breakfast. He had coffee and some toast before quickly running outside to his car. The spring weather felt a little cold against his skin, but the sun quickly caused that to vanish. Thankfully the weather was nice enough that there would be no need for a coat.7:50 A.M, perfectly on time, with 10 minutes to spare. By the time he made it to work he would have enough time to quickly check his E-Mail.
After quite a bit of driving, walking, and opening doors, the young man arrived at his job. It was a computer agency that dealt with computer problems. All of the computers were locked with special devices that could only be opened with a thumb print. It was the latest in digital security.
He placed his thumb on the nearby pad of his computer; Access Granted: Sefton Ivor. The screen switched to black then showed some applications. There were very few compared to most computers and they where there for one reason only, to work. One program was to look up any quick questions one had about the job that they were doing. Another would be to answer calls from employees and customers that need help in their situation. Sefton's job was to help people fix computer problems. It was a boring job and there weren't many calls, most of them were from the elderly who had no computer experience. Most of the people in the agency worked to develop their own software, or company software to make a lot of cash on the side. The computer agency that Sefton worked for, was commonly known for putting out the latest in firewalls and virus protection programs. Sure it was fun and the pay was great to the software programmers, but that doesn't necessarily mean enjoyment in it everyday.
That is why Sefton had developed his own program. One that wasn't exactly normal. It had one purpose and that was to search the web pertaining to life after death. Why he did this was a mystery to most people around him, but he himself had very specific feelings about it. He felt he had no purpose in life but work, until he remembered a ghost story his father would often tell him. It was a short one involving his father being able to see the after life. That story inspired Sefton to pursue what most people would see as a futile and impossible dream. He sought what very few sought, and which no one had found the answer to; how to travel to heaven without dying. Already he had spent a few years of his life reading over everything he could, from astrophysics, quantum physics, and everything else that talks about heaven and hell.
With this new program that Sefton devised, he would have a “super” that checks every possible site and cross references them with a specific list of key words. Already he had tested it out and had great results. So far he has read some of the results and came up with a few conclusions. One was that at the very least, he should be able to talk to the dead. They could talk to us, why not be able to talk to them?
He figured that this was the first step in his quest. By the time he neared completion of the program work had ended. This was a horrible day for the unfinished program, Sefton could not wait until the next day when he completed the project. Only the amazing computers he had at work would allow him capabilities to finish the program. He decided to rid his jitters by hitting a local jazz bar. It was a Monday but the bar was packed anyways.
At the bar he sat there and thought about some of the stuff he had read. Physically, he had figured that it would be near impossible to complete his goals and reach his dreams with current technology. There would need to be another method of doing so. Maybe a way using the mind alone, and some drugs. That was not a likely rate for success with those methods though. But maybe there was a way to create the technology he needed. It would be a hard and long project but, he does have a lot of time on his hand.
He decided to take a bigger break then he expected to clear his head, and got on his cellphone. He called one Mellisa Journs. Sefton's girlfriend of 2 years. He called her to let her know that he was at a bar and that it would be nice for them to hand out for a while. The sound of trumpets and saxophones in the background pervaded his mind. He listed for a while just enjoying the atmosphere.
All the while, he just couldn't stop himself from thinking about a few sites he had found. One offered a special technique that would allow him to separate his soul from his body temporarily. The cost of doing so was high and dangerous, as is most things in life. It involved using a diamond and electricity, as well as gold plating for his contraption. From what he read it would be easier to make this machine then to do it any other way. He quickly thought about all matters of money. How much did he have saved up, how much would something like that cost, his salary, and many other numbers were swirling around in his head.
He felt a hand on his shoulder and a familiar voice call to him,
“Sefton? Are you alright, you looked like you spaced out again?”
“No, no, I'm fine just thinking about work. Another slow day, you know how it goes.”
Sefton's girlfriend had not been told about his free time activities that he has been working on. He know that if he told her, she would still accept him, after all, it wasn't any extreme hobby like binge drinking. The problem was if she would not support his hobbies financially. Already, he had used some of the savings from his girlfriend's account to prepare for a situation like this.
Mellisa held out her hand, “May you have this dance?”
“Sure,” he replied taking her hand. She led him to the dance floor and they danced slowly holding each other in their arms. For once this day, Sefton was able to completely forget about work and his crazy goal. They danced the night away into the late hours before going home.
About a month later, the completion of the program, and the invention that Sefton found on the web, he was about ready to start his exploring. He had built it at odd hours of the night to keep his girlfriend from finding out. Surprisingly enough, the late hours of the night had not put much strain on their relationship. Mellisa's main concern was that her boyfriend was not getting enough sleep and might have a hard time at work.
The sky was a dark mixture of gray and blue as rain poured down on the earth. Except the ground was a reflective glass like tile. Sefton stood in what seemed like the vastness of space with a woman next to him clothed in white. He could see points of light beginning to grow darker all around him.
“Sef!” He was quickly shaken awake.
“What is it Mellisa?”
He rubbed his eyes as he looked at his girlfriend next to him. They had been living together for the past 3 months already. It felt nice that they could be together, and they both enjoyed the company of each other more and more each day. They both felt that they did not want this to end.
“It's getting late, and I don't want us to waste our weekend just sleeping. I already started the coffee pot.”
Mellisa moved closer to Sefton and they causally hugged. They discussed what they wanted to do for the day and the chores they had to do as well as work. After about 15 minutes they eventually got up and began their day. When night came everything, and everyone, began to slow down and tire. Sefton carefully watched and made sure his girlfriend was sound asleep before going to his basement. With the lights off he opened the door to the storage closet, shut it being as quiet as possible, then turned the light on. A little bit of the room was cluttered and there was plenty of room to move around and work.
The machine sat in a box hidden behind an old chair. When it was set up it looked very odd. Completely finished it looked like an odd piece of jewelry. In a sense it was, it was a diamond attached with electrical wires that is worn on the right arm that travels to the neck. Multiple AA batteries are connected in a circuit that uses the diamond as a part of the circuit. Sefton carefully assembled the machine to himself before connecting the wires to make it start. Supposedly it makes a weak electro-magnetic field around the person. In combination with the diamond, it gives the person a sort of control over both the field and the device. All he had to do was focus his mind on the diamond and his dream would come true.
Sefton connected the last two wires. Even though it was he could not tell it was. He did not feel any change within his body or mind. He thought about the consequences of this whole project. Rumor has it that if focuses too hard, he could end up killing himself. With these risks in his mind he focused on the diamond.
In the morning Mellisa woke up and realized that her boyfriend was gone. She first figured that it was no big deal, he would often get up early on the weekend to workout. After a 3 hours she become a little curious why he did not call. She used her cellphone to call him. The phone rang once, twice... She had thought she heard the phone ringing and dismissed it as her imagination. What was more important was the whereabouts of her mate.
The phone went to the voice mail and she retried. Once the phone started to ring, she thought she heard her boyfriends phone rang again. This time Mellisa searched the house for the ring and found it by the bed. Now she more curious and worried then ever. She started yelling Sefton's name and checking each room. When she was in the basement she realized that there was a light coming up under the door. When she opened she say Sefton in an odd position on the floor as if he suddenly fainted. She quickly went to his side and checked to see if he was alive.
“Sef, Sef!” she yelled as her right hand hit his face in a desperate attempt to awake him. It seemed to work, as his body started to move but his eyes remained closed. Mellisa dropped his body and began to stand up when she felt a pain on her shirt. The fabric was ripped in the center. She looked down at his arm and saw the machine and she quickly tore it off. Immediately after Sefton's eyes opened and he began to yawn and stretch. From the looks of it he had not realized what had happened.
“Oh my god, I was so worried for you. Are you alright?” Mellisa held him close as if he where her child.
“I'm fine, a little tired, but I'm OK.”
“Sef, what happened? When I opened the door your body was all limp and you had some kind of coil wrapped around arm.”
“Oh,” said Sefton, he tried to hide the fact that he had a huge success with his machine. “This is a little piece of jewelry I was thinking of making. I must have fell asleep with it on. Fancy jewelry is good business right?”
The rest of the day the couple was able to understand what happened that night, and Sefton casually lied about his works that night and many other nights. By the next week he had sold all his material and got most of his money back while returning to his old way of life. That weekend on a similar night he decided to go and pick up a present for his girlfriend.
When morning came Mellisa woke up and conducted business as usual with her normal chores and activities. Monday she woke up a little bit early with the alarm clock blaring. She turned it off and walked off to the bathroom for a shower. After washing, blow drying her hair and putting on make up she left in her car to work. On the way she stopped to get some coffee at a local coffee shop. Arriving at work at 8 A.M., she slowly found her usual room on the the 34 floor of one of the largest skyscrapers in the city. Her computer greeted her with it usual boot up regime.
Her secretary stopped in shortly after she sat down,
“Good Morning Mellisa, the CEO wants something to be done about profits this month and wants a profit analysis by the end of the week for the meeting this Monday.”
“Thanks Lanly, I'll be sure to take care of it.”
Mellisa looked at her computer; it had finally booted. She double clicked on her browser and searched the net for the news while sipping on some coffee. Nothing out of the normal. This year Africa had, for the first time began to pick itself up. They were expected to bypass most of the world in economy and wealth in the next 15 to 20 years. China had entered in a war with Europe of control over water and similar resource. The Americas were peaceful as usual. Of course America was trying to go to war with some people they do not like. Every since the Yellow party had came into power a few years ago, they have increased spending for weapons. Many think that the US is trying to provoke another war, but this time at a much larger scale. Some predict this might be the next world war.
After work Mellisa drove herself home and prepared dinner. She was always home before Sefton and commonly took care of dinner and other matters of the home. When she had free time she would spend much time in various yoga position. Ever since she was in high school she was interested in yoga. Once she went to a class it became a part of her life and soul.
The front door opened and closed, it was Sefton arriving home from work.
“Hey Sef!”
“I'm home,” he replied. He walked from the small hallway to the left. In it was a room with a few leather chairs and an open space with pictures on the wall. Mellisa was there, and she was walking towards him. When she stopped to ask him a question she saw that his face seemed almost scared or had seen something horrific.
“You alright, you look like you saw a ghost!” said Mellisa worriedly.
“I'm fine, I'm fine. How was your day?”
“Good. My bosses loaded me with a lot of work again but it's nothing out of the normal. And you?”
“Ah, work was the same as usual. I only hope I have a chance at the new position. Well, no need to bother you with my dreams. Let's eat!”
They both sat down at the table in their kitchen. The kitchen was very modern and probably too big for just the two of them. Even with all of the food that was cooked there it was extremely large for any normal chef.
Today Mellisa had cooked a ham with a homemade gravy with various steamed vegetables. They both ate silently for a few minutes before they decided to talk.
“I was at the office today, and when I read the news, it looked like the US is stockpiling weapons again.”
“My god, again? Didn't they do that in the Cold War? Why are they doing that now, the world is relative peace. Sometimes this country drives me crazy.”
“Well we can always get out there and vote! We can change the future and everyone else's.”
“Ah, but don't forget Mellisa, not everyone wants their future changed. Some people are content they way their life's are even if it is not very good.”
“I guess your right. But the needs of the many outweigh the needs of a few.”
“Yes, generally, that is true but I hate when people say that. Every person deserves an equal say. Everyone should be counted because we are all in this together. We all are part of the human race, but half of the time we act like spiders; attacking each other and killing each other's young.”
“That's enough pessimism for today Sef, want to watch some TV or see a movie later?”
“A movie sounds nice, I wonder what's playing in theaters.”
They ended up going to the movie theater and watching a popular flick about a war general. When they got their seats and snacks the movie began to start. Sefton was watching eagerly until he felt a sharp pain on his arm. It quickly traveled up to his neck. The pain subsided a little while afterwards.
After the movie they returned home. Mellisa went to prepare some tea while Sefton used the bathroom. While he was in the bathroom, he remembered he pain he had felt in his arm during the movie. He looked at his arm and neck and they both looked normal. “If there was a problem,” he thought, “somebody, probably would have noticed with my short sleeve shirt on. Anything odd would have gotten Mellisa's attention immediately.”
“Tea's ready!” came a shout in the kitchen.
At 10 o'clock they were both in bed when Sefton had started getting the pain again. It was pretty much the same feeling as before. He had hopped that he hadn't caught some disease or something. The pain kept returning faster and faster until his arm throbbed in pain. This made it nearly impossible for Sefton to sleep so he went to get some aspirin in the bathroom. When he looked at turned the light on he noticed an odd color. He looked at his right arm and almost fainted. There was some form that looked like a tattoo scrawled along his arm. It looked to be made with black ink and had a wavy form to it. Unfortunately it both looked and felt like it was very recent. He tried to scratch it off in case it was something he could remove, but he was wrong, it was embedded in this skin.
Sefton tried to scream out to Mellisa to wake her up but he could not talk for some reason. When he tried to walk back to bed he fell to his felt he lost a lot of strength in his legs and fell to his knees. He was about to attempt to yell one more time when he realized that he was looking at his own head. Soon he felt his was both standing and falling at the same time before he blacked out.
When he awoke there was rain and a dark cloudy sky overhead. The ground felt cold and was hard, flat and shiny. As Sefton stood he noticed that it was a mirror like surface and remembered it from the dreams he had had before. In front of him appeared a man with black baggy pants and a gray shirt. His hair was waved back like it was held back with some moose.
