When doing hair you don't have to fill in the main, light color unless you have some light reflecting off the hair. You just draw in the darker parts by making short strokes where that different colored hair and layers would be. To make it look more real you shade part of the bits which will have shadows cast on them by folds in the skin, the head, paws, etc. *shrugs*
EDIT: Nice picture btw, although maybe the tail could be a bit longer and it seems that the legs are unnaturally placed on one side. Maybe shade the body there to show that the leg is coming over from the other side? But what do I know?

Have you ever seen a cat lie down on their side? They do lie like that. Yeah the tail should be longer, but oh well. I had a bit of trouble shading the legs.

Yeah but the second leg from the right seems slightly detached. Good picture though. I may decide to take up drawing again.
