Hmmm, to practice by yourself is possible. I read somewhere (probably on psi pog) an excersize you can try. Go to a somwhat crowded area, and just practice pinging on people, and see for any sudden reactions, like looking around or puzzlement or stuff like that. That's just my two cents.
